I’m going to teach you how to get paid work experience in 2 steps.
Step 1: Craft a compelling resume
For all of these programs, you’re going to need to create a resume. I’ve put together a detailed resume kit for you all. Step 2: Gain (paid) work experience
Unfortuantely we live in a society where you need work experience to get work experience, even if you’re an entry level candidate. Thankfully there are organizations who create these short-term work experiences to help students and recent graduates not get caught up in this vicious cycle during the job hunt. For someone who doesn’t have much work experience. I’d strongly encourage them to explore externships and micro-internships.
I like to describe externships as “baby internships”. Externships are similar to internships, but shorter in length and focused on providing students with tangible, on-the-job work experience to help prepare them for internships and entry-level roles. Micro-internships are the same and are project based.
Fun fact: Externships and Micro-internships can often serve as pipelines to internships at a company! These programs are often early ID discovery programs, perfect for 1st and 2nd-year students who want to express interest in interning at a company. These programs can also be open to high school, undergraduate, and graduate students!
Here are some companies that offer paid externships and micro-internships:
⭐ Extern
Extern’s externships are remote, paid, short-term work-based experiences. Some of their partners include PwC, Pfizer, Beats by Dre, AT&T, Meta, The Home Depot, National Geographic and so much more!
Parker Dewey’s micro-internship are remote, paid, project-based experiences. Unlike traditional internships that are tied to the academic calendar, Micro-Internships can be used year-round to provide on-demand support for short-term projects (usually requiring a total of 10-40 hours of work). Micro-Internships are utilized across industries and roles, as a precursor or alternative to traditional internships, and as skills-based hiring auditions.
⭐ Bloomberg Analytics and Sales Externships
Aimed at college sophomores, the Analytics & Sales Externship gives you an introduction to the financial markets and a day-in-the-life view of both an Analytics Rep and Sales Rep at Bloomberg. This is an all expenses paid experience in either NYC or San Francisco. Participants may have the chance to receive an Summer 2025 internship offer after the program!
Mayo Clinic Externships are available to current college students as well as recent graduates who want an opportunity to gain more experience in a health care environment. Externships are offered within several different disciplines.
⭐ Tata Consultancy Services Micro-Internships
TCS and Tata Group have created three Micro Internships which simulate real world projects and allow you to get experience in areas such as Data Visualization, Cybersecurity, and Sustainability
